marine DATA HullSpeed is a silicone/epoxy copolymer having unique properties when in contact with water. It is extremely hydrophobic having surface properties approaching that of dimethyl silicones, i.e., 22 dynes/cm2 surface tension and contact angles of 100 degrees with water. HullSpeed is perfectly suited for marine applications allowing for an easy cleaning of surfaces while providing reduced drag resistance through the water. Experiments have demonstrated that HullSpeed can reduce drag resistance in water that previously could only be obtained with dimethyl silicones, while having the abrasion resistance of that obtained with epoxies. Glass surfaces coated with HullSpeed have demonstrated a 1.62% reduction in drag resistance while typical marine anti-fouling epoxies tested under the same conditions have demonstrated significant (5 – 10+ %) drag penalties. The low surface energy allows for easy removal of algae and grass and very weak adhesion of living organisms such as barnacles, tubeworms and other aquatic species. HullSpeed surface properties allow more water to flow across a given area, which can be significantly beneficial in hydroelectric and marine applications for improved flow, fuel economy, ease of maintenance, etc. HullSpeed can be manufactured as an electrically non-conductive coating, thereby avoiding galvanic corrosion associated with antifouling paints on aluminum boats or components.
